Hotel TV and Switch dock: EDID chaos in five minutes
Hotel televisions and Switch docks argue about EDID in ways your living room never does. The dock worked at home. In the room it paints black, flashes a logo, or lands in a muddy 1080p mode. Portable mode on the console is fine. The TV is not dead. The handshake is.
What EDID chaos looks like
EDID is the TV telling the source what modes it accepts. Hotel firmware, odd input labels, and wall-plate paths produce tables that reject docks that were fine last weekend. Sleep and wake make it worse: a path that worked at 11pm fails at 8am after the set slept.
Repeat the check after a cold start of TV and dock. Sleep states hide handshake failures. If the symptom only appeared after you added a wall-plate hop or a spare tip adapter, remove that addition first.
Five-minute hotel protocol
Bypass any wall plate: dock or Ultra High Speed lead straight into a labelled HDMI input on the set.
Use your own short known-good lead, not the drawer cable.
Try a second input if the first stays black.
Leave picture mode alone until you have a stable image; then adjust.
Photograph the working setup: input number, cable, adapter. Next trip starts from evidence.
Carry one known-good short lead or spare tip when you travel. Hotel and train environments punish optimism. Do not leave that lead in the room safe overnight if you need it for the morning.
Adapter before panel
USB-C docks and third-party HDMI adapters fail in ways that look like TV death. Swap only the adapter or hop cable first. Keep the TV input fixed while you do it. A blank docked image with a healthy portable mode is almost never buy a new OLED.
What to pack in the dock pouch
One short Ultra High Speed lead, one known-good USB-C dock or adapter you already tested at home, painter tape, and a phone photo of your home working input. That kit ends most hotel arguments faster than a second console. If the hotel TV has only one free jack behind a locked cabinet, ask staff. Forcing a plate you cannot reseat wastes the evening.
Avoid daisy-chaining the hotel ARC soundbar into your dock path on night one. Get a stable picture first; chase audio second. Soft picture plus missing audio is two problems wearing one panic.
If two modes flicker only after the set slept, power-cycle the TV at the mains once. Hotel eco sleep is aggressive about dropping enhanced HDMI state.
Budget gear still needs proof
Keep receipts and serial photos. Warranty tickets without proof go nowhere, including for cables and adapters bought for travel. Label the known-good lead so a housemate cannot tidy it into the junk drawer before your next trip.
Product that matches the job
When the dock needs a short Ultra High Speed run into a real TV input, use a cable class that matches the mode you want, not a costume sticker. One option we keep in the kit notes: Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
Closing
Hotel black screens are usually EDID and path, not a dead Switch. Bypass plates, use your own short lead, cold-start once, and photograph what worked. Pack that lead every trip.
Quiet hours and neighbour TVs
Hotel RF noise and weak hotel Wi-Fi are separate from HDMI EDID. If the console plays locally but store downloads crawl, that is network, not the dock cable. Do not rip the HDMI path apart for a Wi-Fi symptom.
Pack the proof kit
Short known-good lead, tested adapter, photo of home input, cold-start habit. Bypass wall plates. Picture first, hotel ARC audio second. Portable OK and docked black means path, not a dead Switch. Ask staff before forcing locked-cabinet plates. Weak hotel Wi-Fi is not an HDMI fault — do not rip the dock path apart for a download symptom.
Quiet hours checklist
Power-cycle the TV at the mains once if enhanced mode dies after eco sleep. Avoid daisy-chaining the hotel soundbar on night one. Get a stable picture on a labelled HDMI jack with your own short lead, then chase audio. Photograph both failure and success with the input label visible. Warranty tickets without receipts and serial photos go nowhere for travel adapters either.
